Elizabeth Line – Systems

MTR Crossrail

On 24 May 2022, Transport for London launched a new line, the Elizabeth Line, to run rail services from Reading in Berkshire, through Central London, to Shenfield in Essex.

At the heart of this multi-billion project were the railway systems that would run passenger services efficiently.

Since 2020, CPC Systems has provided operational and systems expertise to support the development, integration, operation, testing, commissioning and maintenance regimes for the Elizabeth Line.

With a high level of systems integration and complexity, our specialist team at CPC Systems worked with MTR Elizabeth Line (network operator), and Transport for London (TfL) subsidiaries Rail for London Infrastructure – RfLI (Infrastructure Manager – central section) and Crossrail (Construction), to interface multiple signalling and control systems with the trains and wayside assets, such as Platform Screen Doors.

Our Services

  • Capacity optimisation
  • Service reliability growth
  • Operational robustness
  • Stakeholder management
  • Diagnostic systems and predict and prevent
  • Systems integration
  • Support to approval submissions

Part of our role was to identify and drive improvements to the rail systems during the testing and commissioning phases including Operational Scenario Testing (timetable operation); Systems Integrated Dynamic Testing (stress proving); Trial Running (performance analysis and improvement), Trial Operations (scenarios and service recovery) and Passenger service (readiness and performance enhancements).

Acting as an honest broker between the operational companies and suppliers we were able maintain a holistic and objective overview of the operation and state of the railway. We championed a successful one team approach with suppliers (Siemens, Alstom and Knorr Bremse) to achieve more effective diagnostics and fixes to improve railway performance and implement condition-based monitoring and enhanced predict and prevent on the new railway’s systems and assets.

Innovative Thinking and Flexibility.

Our approach was to be consistently proactive and our innovative thinking and flexibility enabled us to rapidly analyse performance data and feedback into effective operational and technical mitigations and improvements which were regularly reported to the Elizabeth Line’s Reliability Board.

Ultimately, the railway systems delivery programme that supports the Elizabeth Line, has delivered its key milestones throughout 2022 to ensure an efficient and robust service for its passengers.
