Joe Little was invited by NEST, the National Employment Savings Trust, to talk about his experiences in delivering project management consultancy services over the last 20 years.
NEST, was established to run the government-backed workplace pension scheme, and has set up a Project Community Forum to share knowledge and learn lessons from both private and public sector businesses.
Joe discussed the changing role of project managers and the growing range of soft and hard skills that project managers need to be successful. He highlighted the ‘extra’ (non-technical) roles that are expected of project managers, such as managing inter-team conflicts; handling complex organisational structures; and shielding project teams from disruptive client ‘noise’ that can be a barrier to progress.
Outlining his approach of managing deliverables, Joe asserts that managing projects in bite-sized chunks builds logically towards the project and stakeholder’s strategic goals.
