‘Topping Out’ for new entrance to Bank station

The redevelopment of Bank Underground station reached another key milestone this week, with the ‘topping out’ of a new station entrance at Cannon Street, creating a direct link to the Northern line tube.

This key phase within the construction programme signifies the completion of the roof section and enables work to progress on the internal fit-out of the station entrance.

These works will include creating new internal dividing walls, escalators, lifts, operation rooms, systems installation and testing, as well as a new moving walkway linking the new entrance to the Central line.

The upgrade of Bank station, due for completion in 2022, will boost capacity at the busy interchange by 40 per cent and provide step-free access for the six tube lines serviced at the station.

Andy Swift,  LU’s Programme Manager and CPC Partner said: “This marks a significant step in the delivery of the Bank Station Capacity Upgrade project. Working with our contractor, Dragados we are on target to deliver this important and much needed capacity increase at Bank, ensuring it meets our current and future customer demand.”

Stuart Harvey, TfL’s Major Projects Director, said: “Bank Tube station is one of the busiest on the Tube network, with over 120 million customers using it every year. Once complete, the upgrade will make journeys through the station quicker and more comfortable for everyone, providing greater capacity at this vitally important interchange.”
